Bus Plan Studies IndyGo and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) are currently updating the Comprehensive Operations Analysis (COA, or “bus plan”) — one of several studies being presented as part of Indy Connect (Central Indiana’s Transportation Initiative). The COA evaluates existing transit service to drive recommendations for near-, short- and long-term transit plans. The last version of the COA was conducted in 2005. See the MPO2005 Comprehensive Operations Analysis for reference. Various portions of the updated COA require sub-studies, including an on-board survey, market assessment and others. As they become available, these sub-studies will be posted to this page for convenient reference.
New IndyGo Rider Survey Provides Passenger Trip Patterns and Demographic Information: Conducted in the Fall of 2009, the recently completed On Board Survey was fielded to examine travel behavior and demographic characteristics of existing IndyGo riders. The study also identifies opportunities to improve bus service for current riders and to make it a viable choice for those who currently drive a car or use other options for urban travel. The 2009 On Board Survey included Fixed Route service as well as IndyGo’s ICE routes. A total of 3990 completed surveys were analyzed. The MPO uses information from the on board survey for urban planning processes. IndyGo uses the data for Federal reporting requirements and to help with route design and stop placement. Among Federal programs requiring ridership demographic data is Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color and national origin in programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance. Using ridership demographics, US Census data and other data sources, IndyGo ensures that access to transit and stop amenities is equitably distributed geographically and available to the diverse populations throughout the service area.
