Open Door

The American with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 requires public entities operating fixed route transportation systems to provide comparable paratransit services to people with disabilities. Paratransit buses must serve destinations within three-quarters of a mile from a fixed route. Open Door, IndyGo's ADA paratransit service, is available for eligible riders who, because of a disability, may require an alternative to IndyGo’s fixed route service.  In order to use the Open Door service, individuals must apply and be deemed eligible by the IndyGo Open Door Assessment Office. Eligibility criteria is established by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Approved clients of Open Door can:

  • Make a reservation to travel anywhere inside Marion County plus destinations locations outside Marion County that are within 3/4 of a mile of any fixed route IndyGo bus stop. Each trip costs $3.50.
  • Ride IndyGo local service fixed routes for free with Open Door ID. Review our Open Door Rider Guidelines.

Open Door riders must first apply for eligibility.

What Eligible Open Door Riders Need to Know

To make reservations or cancellations call 317.917.8747:

  • Monday - Friday, 6 a.m. until 6 p.m.
  • Saturday and Sunday, 7 a.m. until 4 p.m.
  • Relay Indiana (for TTY/TDD users) 711 in Indiana or 1.800.743.3333 nationwide

When Making a Reservation, please have the following ready:

  • Your first and last name
  • The date you want to travel
  • The address of your pickup location and your destination
  • Your desired pickup time (please remember to allow a 90-minute travel time to reach your destination)
  • Presence of a personal care attendant (PCA) or companion (riders are only allowed one PCA and one companion per trip) 

Before hanging up with the reservationist, please be sure you have your confirmation number(s). Each trip is assigned a unique number and you may need this information for future reference.

Pickup and Drop-Off Procedures

When you reserve a ride with Open Door, the vehicle may arrive up to 5 minutes before and up to 25 minutes after your scheduled pickup time.
Riders are expected to board the vehicle within 5 minutes of arrival time. After the 5-minute wait, if a rider is not on the vehicle, the driver is required to list the rider as a no show and leave. Passengers may refuse a ride without penalty if the vehicle arrives outside of the scheduled 30-minute window.

Subscription Trips

Subscription trips are regularly scheduled trips that:

  • Start your trip from the same place, such as your home
  • Travel to the same destination, such as work or church
  • Travel on the same day(s) of the week, at least once weekly

Once the subscription trip has been reserved, you only have to make a phone call to cancel the trip by the end of the business day before the day of your scheduled trip. All subscription trips are unavailable during IndyGo's scheduled holidays. Subscription trips may not be available for all trip requests.

Open Door Visitor Information

If you are a certified under ADA criteria for paratransit city in another city and visiting Indianapolis, you are welcome to use Open Door during your visit to Indianapolis for up to 21 days in a calendar year. Learn More
