IndyGo Green

Riding the bus is one way for individuals to help the environment by reducing carbon emissions and the use of fossil fuels from single-passenger vehicles.  But not only is taking transit good for the environment, studies have shown that individuals who take transit more frequently also reduce their risk for obesity, diabetes and hypertension.  By choosing the bus, you’re choosing healthy lifestyle patterns such as walking and cycling.  Since all IndyGo buses have bike racks, it’s never been easier to enjoy Indianapolis amenities like Monument Circle, The Monon, The Cultural Trail, The Canal Walk, and White River State Park.  Check out the map below for IndyGo connectivity with the city’s great outdoor amenities.

Plus, riding the bus can save you money. Find out how much you are spending to commute to work each day: Commute Cost Calculator.

In addition to the benefits of riding the bus, IndyGo as a company makes decisions each day to lessen the impact on our environment.  This page will highlight the following:

New IndyGo ad campaign asks folks to “Go Green in 2010.”

IndyGo Green ad campaign With Federal transit-awareness grant money, IndyGo recently launched a new series of advertising that asks people to "Go Green in the New Year."  The campaign includes 25 billboards throughout Marion County as well as radio and tv spots.  We expect this promotion to lure new riders on board and remind people throughout the city that mass transit is better for the environment than single-occupancy cars.

IndyGo Submits Entries for Indianapolis Sustainability Awards

2009 Indianapolis Sustainability Awards IndyGo submitted two entries to be considered for SustainIndy's 2009 Sustainability Award program.  The entries cover IndyGo initiatives to improve air quality and conserve energy.  These initiatives include public awareness campaigns, use of federal Congestion Management and Air Quality grants, and promotional partnerships with governmental and community groups to promote transit as a sustainable alternative to single-passenger vehicles.  Equally important, they also include IndyGo's efforts to incorporate sustainable practices into our own operational processes and improvements.

Air quality was a strong focus for IndyGo procurement and policy development in 2009.  The agency purchased replacement vehicles that reduce the impact of local transit service on Indianapolis air quality and implemented an idle-reduction policy, demonstrating the transit agency's commitment to cleaner air.  Note: Six New Ford Escapes Hybrid supervisors units were recently put in service.

IndyGo's commitment to energy conservation is primarily apparent in the Facility Update Project currently underway that involves the repair/ replacement of major facility infrastructure systems, including HVAC, lighting and ventilation.  We also demonstrate environmental stewardship in the area of transit safety and enhancement projects, including solar lighting in shelters and other initiatives.  SustainIndy is an initiative of Mayor Ballard.  Award winners will be announced at a luncheon on Tuesday, February 9.

IndyGo Green News & Updates

IPTC’s initial plans for the ARRA funds included a facility upgrade and the replacement of some of our aging buses.  After further exploration of funding use opportunities, IPTC was able to use these funds towards its ongoing Preventative Maintenance program.  In doing so, this allowed for dollars to be reallocated to the planned facility upgrade.  In combination with other grant dollars, IPTC is able to make many of its much needed upgrades including a new roof.  In addition to the 12 new buses from the ARRA grant, IPTC has ordered an additional 10 buses – again, made possible from other pre-budgeted funding sources.  By applying the ARRA money to the Preventative Maintenance program, IPTC was able to operationalize some of these dollars, thus assisting the bottom line of the 2009 IPTC budget and financial plan.
