Riding the bus is one way for individuals to help the environment by reducing carbon emissions and the use of
fossil fuels from single-passenger vehicles. But not only is taking transit good for the environment, studies have shown that individuals who
take transit more frequently also reduce their risk for obesity, diabetes and hypertension. By choosing the bus, you’re
choosing healthy lifestyle patterns such as walking and cycling. Since all IndyGo buses have bike
racks, it’s never been easier to enjoy Indianapolis amenities like Monument Circle, The Monon, The Cultural Trail, The Canal
Walk, and White River State Park. Check out the map below for IndyGo connectivity with the city’s great outdoor amenities.

IndyGo is a proud partner of Knozone The Knozone initiative aims to reduce air pollution by encouraging Indianapolis residents to make choices that reduce our impact on the environment. One of the most environmentally friendly things YOU can do is to leave your car at home. Ride the bus, ride your bike, or carpool. Help us all breathe cleaner air, and get in the Kno! IndyGo ad campaign asks folks to “Bike and Ride.”
Given that all IndyGo buses are equipped with bicycle racks and the IndyGo system has great connectivity to many of the City’s most popular recreational hotspots, we are reaching out to the Indianapolis community with Bike and Ride ideas through collaborations, educational initiatives and advertising. As part of this campaign, IndyGo is making it more appealing for its own employees and contractors to bike to work. Two new bike racks have been installed at IndyGo headquarters. A third rack will be installed in the coming weeks at the Route 8 shelter in front of our building on Washington Street. Think about using your bike a few times a week to get to work or run errands. This low-cost transportation alternative can help you save money while you get fit for summer and reduce carbon emissions in the Indianapolis air. Take the Traffic Skills 101 course developed by the League of American Bicyclists to ensure that you have the skills you need to ride safely. IndyGo Earns Chamber’s Green Business Designation
IndyGo’s Capital Upgrade Project Applauded by SustainIndy
The project includes the procurement of 22 new buses, hybrid supervisor vehicles and even a Segway for the downtown supervisor. It also covers installation of bike racks and solar lighting at bus stops and the repair/replacement of major facility infrastructure systems, including HVAC, lighting and ventilation — all of which will reduce IndyGo’s overall energy utilization and environmental impact. This work is expected to yield approximately $400,000 in annual operational savings. SustainIndy is an initiative of Mayor Ballard. Award winners were announced at a luncheon on Tuesday, February 9.
