Bicycle Indiana Encourages Hoosiers to Bike to Work on May 21
Indianapolis – Tuesday, May 11, 2010 - It’s no secret that walking and cycling are healthier travel options than driving a car. It’s also well known that carbon emissions from cars are a leading contributor to air pollution. That’s why Bicycle Indiana—along with InShape Indiana, INDOT, IndyGo, and SustainIndy are encouraging Hoosiers to participate in this year’s National Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 21.

This annual event brings about 500 people from around the city to Monument Circle. Group commute rides will begin from 11 locations throughout greater Indianapolis and convene at the southwest corner of Monument Circle around 7:30 am. Individual riders may take advantage of the city’s numerous bike paths and lanes for greater bicycling safety and ease. Other options include biking and riding IndyGo as all IndyGo buses are equipped with bike racks.

A corporate challenge is being sponsored by BGI. The Corporate Challenge is open to all public and private corporations, businesses, organizations and government agencies. BGI Corporate Challenge winners are determined according to size of company, percentage of employees participating and total miles ridden.

At the Circle, participants can enjoy a complimentary breakfast and warm coffee. Exhibitors include Central Indiana Commuter Services, Health By Design, IndyGo, Hoosier Environmental Council, Noodles & Company, The Cultural Trail and more. A bicycle parking corral will be available on the Circle, where bicycle commuters can store their bicycles free of charge from
7:00 am – 5:30 pm.

A press conference will be held from 8:00 – 8:30 am on Monument Circle to recognize those who participated in Bike to Work Day and to emphasize the environmental, economic and healthy lifestyle benefits of regular bicycle commuting. Speakers will include City of Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard; Lori Miser of the Metropolitan Planning Organization, a partner in the Indy Connect initiative; and Dr. Larkin of the Indiana State Department of Health.

“Ideally, the experience of biking to work will motivate more people to use the full range of transportation options,” says Nancy Tibbett, Executive Director of Bicycle Indiana. “Finding a good route and having confidence that a bicycle commute is possible convinces many people to use this option at least occasionally. That’s what this event is all about.”
