Transit Planning

An Update on Regional Transit Planning:

Federal Policy Update

Federal transportation reauthorization legislation is currently being debated in the US House and Senate, with new information coming out of both sides of the Congress daily. The American Public Transportation Association has been tracking the bills and providing daily updates.

Indiana General Assembly Update

In January, HB 1073 was introduced into the General Assembly. The bill would have allowed an eligible county to place on the ballot a local public question (in other words, hold a referendum) about whether the county should join a metropolitan transit district, and contribute funding to the transit district by raising the county economic development income tax rate by two tenths of one percent (0.2%). The bill failed to pass out of the House Ways and Means Committee by one vote on January 26. CIRTA plans to embark on a robust campaign to bring this issue back to the General Assembly in 2013

Indy Transit Task Force Final Report

Comprehensive Operational Analysis:

Typically transit systems conduct a Comprehensive Operational Analysis (COA or Bus Plan) of their services every five years. These in-depth studies help identify strengths as well as opportunities for improvement to service. The most recent bus plan (2010) contains short-, mid- and long-term recommendations for the growth and development of Central Indiana’s bus system. The plan proposes to triple the size of our current bus system and provide riders with shorter wait times between buses and more hours of service, plus more direct routes.

On Board Surveys:

These surveys are an important tool for transit agencies. For a system of IndyGo’s size, surveys can help determine who is riding and how the system is being used. There are a variety of reasons that people choose to ride IndyGo such as it’s more affordable then owning a car and it’s better for the environment. Survey results are also used for planning and travel modeling as well as federal reporting to ensure service is distributed equitably to users.

Transit Amenities:

IndyGo has the ability to add transit amenities throughout the city, including bus stops, benches, shelters and bus turnouts. However, we can't install them everywhere. We have to make sure we follow ADA and City of Indianapolis requirements. By clicking on the transit amenities below, you can learn more about our installation guidelines. If you are interested in making a transit amenity request for your area, please complete an online comment form.
