ADA (for benches and shelters)

To meet ADA requirements, a clear zone pad must be constructed at each new bus stop with dimensions 5’ parallel to the curb and 8’ perpendicular to the curb (see Figure 1). This clear zone pad must be paved, clear of all obstructions, on a firm, stable surface with maximum 2% slope perpendicular to the roadway. This pad allows for the lowering of a ramp from the accessible bus fleet and space for a person using a mobility device to board that ramp. No street furniture or other obstructions, including benches and shelters, may be placed within this 5’ by 8’ pad. A sidewalk may, however, run through the pad.

Curb heights between 6” and 9” are necessary at the pad for safe deployment and boarding of the ramps. In instances where there are no curbs present, this will mean having to construct a platform for the pad in order to provide proper boarding access. In these cases, drainage must be considered and accommodated and the platform must be designed so as not to provide a hazard to vehicles or pedestrians using the right-of-way. Slope of any section leading to or from the platform shall not exceed 2% and the path between the shelter or bench and the waiting pad must be completely accessible.
