We have approximately 4,000 bus stops to serve our customers. Each location is unique with characteristics all their own. Most stops are placed in the City right-of-way. Many factors are considered when placing new stops. A few things we look at are sidewalk access, trip generators, safe crossings, ADA, traffic, and distance between stops. Because conditions across the City vary, we work as best as we can with the existing infrastructure. If there are places where we can make access and connectivity improvements, we will try to work with the City and other parties to do what is feasible. Ideal bus stop spacing is ¼ of a mile. Thanks to passenger counters on every bus, we now know the average daily ridership by bus stop. With this information, we can determine if a stop warrants an improvement based on utilization over other stops. Depending on the number of boardings and existing stop conditions, we may consider placing a bench, bike rack, or shelter at a stop where feasible. For placement of a shelter/bench, we follow our own strict guidelines as well as those of the City and ADA when placing a structure in the right of way.
