INDIANAPOLIS — After reaching 100% design completion in mid-September, the construction contractor bidding process is now underway for IndyGo’s Blue Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. Contractors recently submitted proposals for IndyGo’s review and evaluation. The selected construction contracts are expected to be announced at the December Board Meeting on Thursday, Dec. 19.
Blue Line construction is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2025 and continue through 2028. This work will be carried out simultaneously at multiple locations along the Washington Street project corridor, which spans from Holt Road to Cumberland.
During construction preparation, utility companies are expected to begin relocating facilities on and around Washington Street in the coming months. Some of this work may start as early as December. These utility relocations are essential for delivering the Blue Line project on time and are anticipated to continue through mid-2027, both ahead-of and in-conjunction with construction.
Prior to the start of construction, there will be multiple opportunities for stakeholders to engage with IndyGo, including a series of public meetings in different sections along Washington Street. Additional details will be announced soon.
The Blue Line will serve as the third of IndyGo’s three planned BRT lines. The 24-mile project will largely replace one of IndyGo’s highest ridership routes, Route 8, and will provide fast, frequent and reliable transit service between Cumberland and the Indianapolis International Airport.
