In addition to sponsoring free bus fare on Transit Equity Day Tuesday, Feb. 4, the IndyGo Foundation is hosting a luncheon for nonprofit partners and donors that will recognize 119 local charities that have been awarded bus fare grants to increase public transportation accessibility.
INDIANAPOLIS — When IndyGo riders board the bus on Transit Equity Day, Tuesday, Feb. 4, they will receive a welcome surprise at the farebox. In celebration of the holiday, the IndyGo Foundation, in partnership with IndyGo, is sponsoring free fare for all riders. The Foundation will also use this occasion to award their annual bus fare grants to local nonprofit partners working to make public transportation accessible, equitable and inclusive.
“We are thrilled to recognize charitable organizations throughout the Indianapolis area who join with us to ensure that our neighbors have access to an essential, often forgotten, basic need – transportation. Through the generosity of our donors this grant cycle, we will share the gift of transit with a record 119 Marion County nonprofit partners,” said IndyGo Foundation Executive Director Emily Meaux.
In its fourth year of awarding bus fare to nonprofits, the IndyGo Foundation will distribute the largest amount of bus fare given since the program started. Last year, the Foundation’s partners reported serving 1,097,273 individuals with transportation barriers to employment, food, healthcare and other essential services.
Transit Equity Day was first celebrated federally in 2021 and honors civil rights leader Rosa Parks on her birthday, February 4.
