IndyGo Foundation, OneAmerica Financial Foundation Celebrate Transit Equity with Fare-free Rides on IndyGo – IndyGo Foundation awards transit fare grants to 136 local charities

INDIANAPOLIS — When IndyGo riders board the bus on Transit Equity Day, Wednesday, Feb. 4, they will receive a welcome surprise at the farebox. In celebration of the holiday, the IndyGo Foundation, in partnership with OneAmerica Financial Foundation, is sponsoring fare-free rides.

Transit Equity Day, a nationally recognized holiday, commemorates the birthday of Rosa Parks, the courageous civil rights activist whose refusal to give up her bus seat in 1955 sparked a nationwide movement toward racial justice and equitable public transportation. Rosa Parks’ legacy carries on with the ongoing work of current advocates pushing for just and inclusive transit systems for all.

OneAmerica Financial Foundation is sponsoring Transit Equity Day this year to provide free fares and is also the presenting sponsor of the Transit Equity Day Celebration.

Kim Thomas, President of OneAmerica Financial Foundation said “The OneAmerica Financial Foundation is committed to making public transportation more accessible and affordable for everyone. Whether it’s getting to work, school, a doctor’s appointment, or picking up groceries, reliable transportation is essential for daily life. By supporting initiatives that remove barriers and create better transit options, we’re helping communities stay connected and grow stronger.”

The Transit Equity Day Celebration is from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Eiteljorg Museum offers a unique opportunity to reflect on IndyGo Foundation’s five years of progress and lessons learned as one of the first transit foundations in the country. Through interactive discussions and storytelling, we’ll explore the state of transit equity in Indianapolis and celebrate the impact of transit on lives across our city. Limited tickets are available for $20 and sponsorships start at $1,000. Contact sponsors@indygofoundation.org or visit https://bit.ly/TED2026 to reserve your place at this year’s event.

Guests of honor at the Transit Equity Day Celebration are representatives from the 136 local nonprofit organizations who received a 2025-26 transit fare grant from IndyGo Foundation. “Through our grant program, IndyGo Foundation is proud to support nonprofit organizations that advance equity, mobility and opportunity. These grants help ensure that community-led solutions continue to thrive and that individuals and families can access the transit resources they need,” said IndyGo Foundation Executive Director Emily Meaux.

In its fifth year of awarding bus fare to nonprofits, the IndyGo Foundation will distribute bus fare to the largest number of organizations yet. Since its inception, IndyGo Foundation, in partnership with IndyGo and other funders, has awarded a total of $1.68M in transit fare to local nonprofits.

The 2025-26 grants were funded through the generous support of IndyGo, Glick Philanthropies, J.D. Finish Line Foundation, Scales Family Foundation, Nicholas H. Noyes Jr. Memorial Foundation, and The Brave Heart Foundation.

The 2025-26 bus fare grant period is currently closed however; nonprofit organizations can still apply to receive a discount on bus fare purchases. IndyGo also provides free and reduced programs for veterans, seniors, students and individuals with disabilities. Together, these resources expand transportation freedom for those who need it most.
