INDIANAPOLIS — On Tuesday, June 10, at 4 p.m., IndyGo and the Indianapolis Office of Public Health and Safety (OPHS) Division of Community Nutrition and Food Policy will launch the eighth consecutive year of Food in Transit. This engaging outreach series aims to expand access to food for Indianapolis residents, regardless of economic status, by bringing free meal ingredients and fresh, locally-grown produce to the Julia M. Carson Transit Center, located at 201 E. Washington St. After the launch, Food in Transit will take place every second and fourth Tuesday, at 4 p.m., until Sept. 30.
The free meal ingredients and produce will be offered once again this year to show the commitment by IndyGo and the City to improving access to healthy foods.
In addition to the complimentary meal ingredients and produce, participants can look forward to recipes sharing how to cook the available prepackaged foods. Food in Transit is designed to inspire healthy eating habits and increase community access to nutritious food options.
The free produce is provided through a partnership with the Kheprw Institute. The collaboration and recipe ingredients are made possible thanks to $7,500 in federal funding from OPHS, as well as contributions from Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana.
“Food in Transit has become a staple community program we offer annually to increase residents’ access to resources that positively affect their health and overall well-being,” said IndyGo President and CEO Jennifer Pyrz. “By offering a direct line to opportunities that go beyond transportation such as this, we are helping build resilient and prosperous neighborhoods alongside our partners.”
“Good health starts with good food,” said Administrator of the Division of Community Nutrition and Food Policy for OPHS Cheria Caldwell. “Food in Transit is a key example of how partnerships rooted in equity and accessibility can directly impact the well-being of our neighbors. We’re removing barriers and providing Indy residents with access to nutritious options without added cost or inconvenience.”
Interested parties can use IndyGo’s online trip planner here to travel to the Carson Transit Center and participate in the program.
