INDIANAPOLIS (Jan. 6, 2014) – In coordination with the City’s decision to extend closures, normal IndyGo bus operations are suspended on Tuesday, Jan. 7 due to extremely cold temperatures.

“While road conditions are beginning to improve, IndyGo will suspend service on Tuesday in order to help keep our customers and professional operators safe,” said Mike Terry, IndyGo president and CEO. “The winter weather advisory extends until 7 p.m. tomorrow with windchills up to -40 degrees expected.”

On the second day of suspended services, IndyGo will continue to honor reservations made for transportation to vital medical appointments on its Open Door paratransit service. Only standing reservations for certified Open Door riders needing to travel to dialysis appointments are being honored. No new reservations or Open Door certifications are being issued during the winter weather emergency.

Emergency transportation to shelter and dialysis is being coordinated by the Indianapolis Department of Homeland Security. Indianapolis residents should contact Indianapolis DHS directly at 487-6329 to coordinate emergency transportation.

In preparation for Wednesday’s anticipated regular transit services, IndyGo’s customer service call center will reopen at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 7 for a shortened day. The center will remain open until 7 p.m. on Tuesday and will open one hour early on Wednesday morning at 6 a.m. Route detours and delays are expected for Wednesday’s bus service, so customers are encouraged to call the customer service center at 635.3344 during these modified hours.

In addition to the customer call center reopening on Tuesday, IndyGo will begin staffing its Open Door reservations line for customers needing to book a trip for Wednesday. The Open Door reservation line will be open noon to 7 p.m. on Tuesday and will open on Wednesday morning at 6 a.m.

The IndyGo services cancelled for Tuesday, Jan. 7 include:

  • Regular fixed route service
  • All Non-Dialysis Trips Reserved on IndyGo’s Open Door Paratransit
  • Customer Service Call Center– partial day. Open noon to 7 p.m.
  • IndyGo Retail Center
  • Open Door Reservations– partial day. Open noon to 7 p.m.
  • Open Door Assessment Office
  • Some Administrative Office Functions

While a cancellation of most of the transit agency’s normal weekday operation includes the agency’s largest division, fixed route bus service, essential operations will continue at the IndyGo headquarters.
