INDIANAPOLIS – With the start of the Purple Line construction a few weeks away, IndyGo will host a pop-up drive-thru event Thursday, Feb. 17, from 7-9 a.m., in partnership with the Indiana State Fairgrounds & Event Center. This event will prepare the public for the project’s first major closures on East 38th Street, scheduled to start on or after March 7.

The drive-thru event will take place in the south lot of the state fairgrounds, located on 38th Street between Coliseum and Woodland avenues, at 1202 E. 38th St. IndyGo team members will be handing out cups of free coffee, while supplies last, courtesy of Blue Mind Coffee. Motorists will also receive Purple Line giveaways and a postcard with the latest update on 38th Street closures and detours. Nitro, Indy Fuel’s mascot, will also make an appearance.

The project’s first major traffic impact will start on or after March 7, on 38th Street from Fall Creek Parkway to Orchard Avenue and last 10 days. Eastbound traffic on 38th Street will be detoured via Fall Creek Parkway and Keystone Avenue. Westbound traffic will be detoured via Keystone Avenue, 46th Street and College Avenue. This closure will be immediately followed by a 130-day eastbound closure on 38th Street from Fall Creek Parkway to Keystone Avenue. Eastbound traffic will be detoured via Fall Creek Parkway and Keystone Avenue. Westbound traffic in this stretch will not be impacted. Local access to all residences and businesses will be maintained during both closures.

For the safety of riders and construction workers, some bus stops will be closed and temporarily relocated on Routes 4 and 39 during both closures. During the 10-day closure from Fall Creek Parkway to Orchard Avenue, closed bus stops will include 10167, 10169, 10088 and 10087. During the 130-day closure from Fall Creek Parkway to Keystone Avenue, closed bus stops will include 10167 and 10169. Westbound service will not be affected.

Once construction starts, the IndyGo team will host virtual office hours every Wednesday from 5-6 p.m. Those with questions can register anytime to attend here.

The Purple Line is the second of IndyGo’s three planned bus rapid transit lines. The 15.2-mile project will connect Indianapolis to the City of Lawrence and replace and improve a large portion of existing Route 39. It is poised to provide better access to work, education, healthcare, restaurants, entertainment and shopping. It will also bring infrastructure improvements to the area, including new and improved sidewalks, ADA curb ramps, multi-use pathways, storm sewer separation and more.
