INDIANAPOLIS – Indy’s first rapid transit line is in the home stretch of construction. Opening the Red Line will accompany a major wave of improvements to IndyGo service including every route running every day, improved frequencies, and easier transfers.
Phase 1 of construction began in June 2018 and, after 15 months of construction, is expected to open for service this September.
The 13-mile corridor will bring much more than 10-minute reliable service as approximately 40% of the Red Line budget has addressed additional infrastructure elements including sidewalks, roadway repairs, and drainage work.
Crews continue to work hard throughout the 13-mile route and as of April 1, have completed:
- 14,148 linear feet of sidewalk replaced
- 25 station platforms constructed
- 14,889 linear feet of storm sewer installed
- 21, 085 linear feet of curb replaced
- 238 ADA curb ramps
- 66 traffic signals upgraded
- 19 lane miles of paving
Upon completion, residents and visitors will also notice new trees, a protected bicycle lane on Illinois Street, and landscaping at stations.
